What is anaemia?

feeling very tired (i have a fatigue illness anyway, but have been feeling ridiculously tired)
not sleeping very well
feeling sick (and no i am not pregnant!)
gone off of food
its probably just my illness (chronic fatigue syndrome/m.e)
but someone mentioned it to me today (about anaemia)
what exactly is it
and do i have normal symptons of it?

Anaemia is basically a lack of iron in your system.
You can feel like you’re chronically tired or run down, although you could feel like this because of your ME.
Go to your doctors Harri a simple blood test will tell you.

It is caused by a lack of iron in the blood…this can be because of an illness or excessive bleeding .So it is possible that you have it . It is best to get this checked via a blood test from your GP who will be able to advise you on diet and supplements to help raise your iron levels back to normal….fatigue is a typical symptom of anaemia and needs treatment.Severe anaemia can be very serious.

Anaemia is a condition in which the blood fails to supply the body’s tissues with sufficient amounts of oxygen. This is due either to a lack of red blood cells, or to each cell containing too little of the oxygen-carrying pigment haemoglobin.
Blood cells are created by the bone marrow, and normally are destroyed after about four months of life.
Anaemia results when the balance of this mechanism is disturbed.
Either the bone marrow produces too few blood cells, or the cells are destroyed or lost at too fast a rate.
There are several causes of anaemia. They include: Defective bone marrow
A shortage of iron, the main ingredient of haemoglobin
A shortage of the vitamins B12 or folic acid, both needed to produce red blood cells
Loss of blood, through heavy menstruation, or internal bleeding, which may be caused by disease
Infections such as malaria.
Iron deficiency anaemia is by far the most common, but there are other types too, such as pernicious, aplastic, and sickle cell.
You really do need to go and see your doctor for a blood test to see if you are anaemic, and get yourself some treatment for it.

Go to your doctors about the nose bleeds.
If they’re are really bad then your blood isn’t clotting very well. My step mother has ME and nose bleeds aren’t one of signs of it although the others are. You can easily get tested for blood quality, they can check on the clotting problem and check your iron aswell as doing a blood count.
In the mean time take all the vits and mins as usual and the bacteria that you should be on for the ME. Check under your eye by pulling the lower lid down slightly - if it’s a skin colour rather than really red it could be a sign of anaemia. Take extra iron while waiting for the results of the blood test, but remember that you need other vitamins to support the iron intake although support vitamins should be mixed with the iron tablets.
When your results come back your doctor should explain them but an iron count below 11 is low and around 9 is classed as anaemia, just to help you understand the results.

Anemia is, as has been mentioned already, a lack of iron in your blood system. That’s the technical part of it, but the effects are far more than the definition would imply…
Anemia can result in fatigue and sickness because it’s the iron in your blood that the hemoglobin uses to grab the oxygen every time you inhale. If you’re low on iron, you’re not going to absorb as much oxygen, and you’re going to be run-down as a result…which also can lead to illness.
In addition, anemia also means that your body cannot clot as well, which is why your bloody noses get so bad…they aren’t clotting like they should.
I’d suggest taking an iron supplement, as well as seeing your physician to get a formal diagnosis - your doctor can recommend changes to your diet, as well as supplements, which should turn this thing right around in almost no time!

There are different types of anaemia. The definition of all anaemias - disorder in which haemoglobin (the oxygen carrying pigment in red blood cells) is deficient or abnormal.
The most common is iron-deficiency anaemia (which is what I myself suffer from) is is basically a type of anaemia caused by inadequate levels of iron in the body. As you probably are aware, iron is an essential component of haemoglobin in the production of blood. If insufficent iron is available, the production of haemoglobin and its incorporation into red blood cells in the bone marrow are reduced. As a result, there is less haemoglobin to bind with oxygen in the lungs and to carry the oxygen to the tissues of the body. Consequently, the tissues may receive insufficient oxygen.
The general symptoms are -
tiredness and a feeling of faintness
pale skin
shortness of breath on mild exertion.
some other symptoms are -
brittle/concave shaped nails
painful cracks in the skin at the sides of the mouth
a smooth and reddened tongue.
If you think you might be anaemic, you should ask your doctor to measure the levels of haemoglobin and iron in your blood.

Anaemia is condition where the condition of red blood cells is less than normal or Haemoglobin is less. This causes difficulty to carry oxygen in blood.
Symptoms;- tiredness,pale color, pale lips, nails, inside eyelids
Fatal if not treated.

Lack of iron, it can make you drained, really pale, tired etc, I have it just now, but then again I am pregnant, ask your GP for a blood test to rule it out!

Your doctor will give you ferrous sulphate which is a great source of iron.
