swollen ankles and lower legs.?
Posted in Health Insurance - Free QuotesMy 74 yr old father will not see a doctor. The stubborn man just grins and bears any difficulties in life. (Admirable, but sometimes foolishly.) About 6 years ago, he had a double heart bypass. He had always been a smoker although he has now packed up for the last 3mths. If on his feet much, his ankles and lower legs swell up and give him pain. I also know that he has pain from his knee. Due to his restricted exercise he is overweight. At night he is continually getting up for a pee. Could this be to do with fluid retention from the swelling which is expelled when he has his feet up? He is a light drinker of alcohol. Does any one know possible causes or cures failing me getting him to go to the Doc’s? Help!!! Any assistance in getting him better or attended to will be much appreciated. Thanks

Hi there. Sorry your not having much luck in getting your father to the doctor and he is being foolish. There are many causes for this symptom. It sounds like it could be oedema and is easily fixed with diuretics (water pills). However and I dont want to alarm you, as he has had a double bypass, it could be related to his heart. The heart is a pump and this could be a sign that its not doing its job as effectively as it could. Does he suffer from any pain when he is walkin? Is he breathless? Chest pain? It could be so many things. I would not tell him any of this as it may make him less likely to see his doc as he may be frightened. Ask him to go for you. It may sound like bullying but sometimes its the only way. Tell him that if he does not call that you will. It may be nothing serious but why take the risk? Keep us posted as to the outcome..
